Wees gelukkig met wat je hebt en leef in het nu.
(Be happy with what you have and live right now)
A quote Pollevie has tattooed on her foot to remind
herself that every day…. A beautiful thought!
Pollevie is a colorful international crochet artist
with an interesting history that brought her into the colorful life of the
crochet world.
I understand that lots of you are thinking who is Pollevie? , but you’ll find out when you will continue reading this blog…

By accident, I met Pollevie and her crochet workshop.
Like usually things happen to me and it appears to be really fun…
and so also this encounter. My friend asked me if it
would be fun to go to a workshop of Pollevie together and of course, my answer
was YES!
I was ready for some Me-time……

Until later, when I dug into Pollevie for the
interview, I found out who’s she actually was… I also couldn’t really follow all the stories at the workshop and
just listened to it. New York, Purely
Patricia, crochet hooks form Australia… yeah right, I missed something. ☺️ Though I am very happy that I didn’t know all of that and purely enjoyed the workshop and
the conversations I had with Pollevie.
A little color
was what I needed and that’s what you’ll get if you let yourself get inspired by the models
of Pollevie. Color is for most people very obvious but it has a lot more
influence on us than we realize. You can directly express something with color without
using words. It influences
your mood, positivism, your happiness, creativity, and even your productivity.
Colors give the human kind color and so also by Pollevie. It’s not only her crochets because also her personality
makes that she’s in your mind and keeps you inspired to stay positive
in life.
And that’s also what she wants to pass her fans onto: enjoy what you’re doing and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You don’t have to sugarcoat things, just make something out of it. Don’t think just do it…

You don’t have to take life so seriously, but let it come to
you and enjoy! Color can and it’s ok and let it motivate you so that you can do way
more than you initially thought you could. Let your creativity flow and stay
positive…
and of course, life is not always fun. Also, Pollevie
knows about that…
way to little time, wool that’s not in stock, but in general it’s all fun and games. Even though it’s not always going well or it’s not going how you want it to be… Go with the flow and make something of it. Don’t let it get you down…
It’s partly your character and partly how you’ve been raised that makes you how you are today. And
so with pollevie that, because of her father’s work, has lived all around the world and many times
had to adapt to new cultures and friendships that she had to leave behind all
the time again. Not always easy but you’ll get very independent of it. With a Dutch father and
an Australian mother, she got born in Asia. She’s lived in Oman and England and went to the
Netherlands when she was 14 years old.
The effect of a nomadic existence is that you will think in every possibility, your friendships are different, easy in getting contact with other people, flexible, but also that you can always fall back on yourself. You learn something from every culture and take it with you and so also the fascination for colors that she developed in Oman. The country of the beautiful colors.

Though it’s her mother that’s a big inspiration source and she calls her with a loving voice “mama”.
That’s the woman who taught her how to crochet, the woman
that’s always been creative and took her daughter with it,
but she’s especially thankful that she was allowed to wear
lots of colors from her… all the beautiful dresses with fantastic colors…
that made her very happy. She has lots of beautiful
memories from her childhood and their family. And
that’s also very important to be stable in life… a home full of love.
Pollevie has lived in England from her 8th till her
13th. In the beginning, she really had to get used to the transition that our
western world has a lot of influence. That was different than in Oman where she
had lived for many years. So many different kinds of bread, milk, and
vegetables…
so many choices and also so confusing! That you had to
wear a school uniform at school was nice. No bullying about what you looked
like…
that was a little different when she moved to the
Netherlands when she was 14 years old. The whole class didn’t like her, because she was “different”. All the happy colors, a unique style, and a totally
different life experience because of her nomadic existence… that’s something other people didn’t quite get yet. That resulted in redoing her year, but she had a plan for her next upcoming year… the bullying wouldn’t happen again. She became the rebel of the class and
made sure everyone was a part of it. That’s something more people should do… stick up for others and help each other! Accept
everyone for who and what they are… and be proud
of yourself that you’re not like everyone else!

When she turned 17 she went to the PABO, (a study to
become a teacher in the Netherlands) because she really wanted to become a
teacher. In that period her parents decided to live in China because of her dad’s work. And she had to live with her brother, who is 1
year younger, on her own. It looked kind of a Pippi long stocking house, but she liked it. When she was 18 she met Mark, who
was a truck driver in Maastricht. They got a relationship and Pollevie moves to
Maastricht where she finishes her study. Shell,
the company her father worked for, notices her and asks if she wants to
teach at the Shell compounds all around the world. Even though Pollevie is very
enthusiastic about it, her Mark isn’t as much. They live for a while in the house of her
parents in Lisse, who lived in Australia at that time, but then at the age of 23, she really had to spread her wings again.

She leaves together with Mark for half a year to India/Nepal/Thailand… she has the time of her life… what a color…what a culture. Shortly after her comeback to the Netherlands she appeared to be pregnant and gets her first son Tibbe. And not that long after her second son Jurre. Because of the difference in character and desires of life becomes her relationship with Mark a little rocky…Though she gave birth to her daughter Pien. The pregnancy doesn’t go as planned, because she’s rhesus-negative and gets very sick during her pregnancy. Despite that, the doctors advise her to terminate the pregnancy Pollevie keeps on believing and trusts her own body that it will indicate whether it is good or wrong…
both of them made it to end of the pregnancy and a beautiful girl welcomes the world with a smile. Only mama and papa separate after one year…it’s over.

Two years after the birth of her daughter she meets
Mees…
they played Wordfeud with each other for three months
and talked through chat. Pollevie is convinced that it’ll not become anything more because he ’s sooooo not the man she could fall in love with if
she looks at his appearance…. Though faith has another plan. They appear to be a perfect match for each other. He
was the sparring partner she was looking for when she needed it. It’s a very relaxing relationship with a lot of humor and
respect for each other… Yin and
Yang.
And she gets to be the mama-plus for the three teenage
kids of Mees.
But how do you do it… a long distance relationship, entrepreneurship, being
a mother and a teacher. Easily saying no is the
answer.
I am an easy mother, in which I stimulate my children
to develop their own independence and to discover their world. I am not a party
girl and have friendships all around the world, but they all have their own
content like usually with friendships on a distance. My children, Mees,
crochet, and traveling are the most important to me and I try to find the right
balance between that. I have a lot of support from Mees when it comes to
finding a balance within my company… he’s my back office she says with a lovingly look in her
eyes. And just like us, she struggles with things, but it’s all about how you deal with those struggles…
being relaxed in life is the answer.
Her Pollevie career started at creative markets about
5 years ago. She pimped scarfs an then sold them at school playgrounds and the
market in Amsterdam. Later her Etsy store came by and she developed her own
workshop because there was a lot of request for it… and from then on her workshops did go as a snowball
all around the world. Around every 2 months, she tries to make new tutorials
and she’s trying to make her own book with a German publisher.
Busy lady…
with humor. The inspiration keeps on going because her
creative mind doesn’t stop and the things around her like the flower
fields give her new impulses.
But if you’re so busy with your company why are you still a
teacher.
Ohh she says, I’ll always wanna be a kindergarten teacher. It keeps me young and young children always look so
innocent to the world around them. Amazing how surprised they can look at a
worm…
no day is the same. It gives so much inspiration and
energy I wouldn’t miss that for the world.
The morning passed away too soon and Pollevie has to
pick up her kids for lunch… we still have to do the photoshoot! I am so amazed by the
fact that we look alike a little bit, the way how we think about things… every beat of your
heart is a rhythm of your soul… be proud and thankful for who and what you are!
I happily eat along and listen to the conversations of her children… my thoughts go back to the time when my children were still little… so nice all that coziness! They talk about school, what they have done and.. oh well we talk about everything and nothing and before we know it I have to say goodbye… daughter Pien really wants to go on the picture … Well, that can be arranged… And of course, Tibbe and Jurre don’t wanna lose that opportunity as well and together with Pollevie we make a few beautiful pictures with a lot of fun!
Pollevie and I are continuing taking pictures and even though we can’t do all my ideas I had in mind because of mother nature, we still have a lot of fun and a loooooottt of sparkles and we’ve shot a lot of beautiful pictures.
Thank you so much Pollevie, Tibbe, Jurre and Pien for the inspiring and happy day… see you next time and I will be there! You too right?!!
Around here we don’t look backwards for very long.
We
keep moving forward, opening new doors and doing new things because we’re
curious….
And
curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.
